Fluorescence in-situ hybridisation(FISH) -
bone marrow/trephine, blood
REQUESTING AND COLLECTING

Ordering:
Relevant clinical history and if possible, the FISH probe required must

be stated on the request form.



The test attracts a Medicare-rebate for diagnosis and follow-up of

genetic rearrangements in the following diseases:

- Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)

- Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)

Mast cell disease/idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome/chronic

eosinophilic leukaemia.



The test is non Medicare-rebatable for allother FISH testing. The

referring clinican will be charged unless a Patient Consent form, signed

by the Patient accompanies the Request form.

Collection:
Aseptic technique must be used.



1mL of bone marrow or 6mL peripheral blood collected aseptically into a

Sodium Heparin tube, no gel (6mL green-top - available from CSR)

NOTE: lithium heparin, green-top is NOT acceptable.



Trephine specimen collected into 5-10mL transport medium (Hank's

BSS/Culture medium). DO NOT allow specimens to come into direct

contact with ice-brick.



Bone Marrow slides or trephine squashes may be used for some FISH

testing. Please contact the Cytogenetics/FISH laboratory (8382

9153/8154) to discuss.

available within 1 week of sample arrival in laboratory.

Handling & Transport:

Transport same day if possible at room temperature. If delayed

overnight, store and transport at 2 - 8 degrees.

SydPath Handling:
Keep at room temperature. Deliver immediately to Cytogenetics/FISH

Laboratory.
