REQUESTING AND COLLECTING

Collection:
Fluoride-Oxalate tube (Grey-top) absolutely required if collected

outside St Vincent's campus. Heparin or serum tubes may be used only

if sample is transported to laboratory within 1 hour of collection. Note

on request if patient is fasting.
Container(s):
Heparin tube (5 mL lime-top) - Preferred for Inpatients

Fl-Oxalate tube (5 mL grey-top) - preferred

Serum (gold-top) - Acceptable if rapidly centrifuged

GENERAL INFORMATION

Availability:
Test performed 7 days/24 hours. Results available 2 hours after sample

arrival in laboratory.

Reference Intervals:
3.0 - 5.5 mmol/L (fasting)

3.0 - 7.8 mmol/L (random)

The upper limit for fasting glucose does not represent expected values

in the population. Results above this value may lead to consideration of

an oral glucose tolerance test, particularly in patients with other risk

factors for diabetes.
