Ordering:
SydPath will add "Active B12" testing where total B12 is below 200

pmol/L. This test provides improved diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency

and is covered by Medicare at no cost to the patient.

Collection:
Test requires serum (gold top) tube for reflex addition of active B12 if

needed. Heparin tubes can be used for total B12 but not active B12.

Heparin tube (5 mL lime-top) - Acceptable

EDTA (5 mL purple-top) - NOT Acceptable

Test performed 24 hours / 7 days Results available 3 hours of sample

arrival in laboratory.

Reference Intervals:
Replete: >140 pmol/L

Indeterminate: 90 - 140 pmol/L

Deficient: <90 pmol/L

Values <200 pmol/L will also have Active B12 measured.

(assay changed to Beckman Coulter DxI analyser on 2 Sep 2018. New

assay ~25% lower; reference intervals revised.
