REQUESTING AND COLLECTING

Collection:
For single daily dosing of Gentamicin (recommended for most

conditions) a sample should be taken between 6 and 14 hours after the

drug dose and the results interpreted using a nomogram available via the

SydPath website. If trough levels are required (used for multiple doses

per day) the sample should be taken just prior to the next dose.
Container(s):
EDTA (5 mL purple-top) - preferred

GENERAL INFORMATION

Availability:
Test performed 7 days/24 hours. Results available 2 hours after sample

arrival in laboratory.

Reference Intervals:
Once Daily Dosing

Interpretation with nomogram is recommended.(see below)

Trough: < 0.5 mg/L

8 hourly dosing:

Trough: 0.5 - 1.0 mg/L

Nomogram: The sample for an aminoglycoside concentration should be

collected 6 - 14 hours after the dose and results compared to the St

Vincent's Hospital nomogram
